Gladys Beale

Gladys BealeGladys Beale, who died on Tuesday 18th March, was a pupil at St Mary's Calne from 1921 to 1926 whilst Marcia Matthews was Headmistress.  After leaving St Mary's she taught in various prep schools for eleven years.  She started her own school in Minchinhampton in September 1942, and continued to educate local children to a very high standard until her retirement in 1977.

She was a key member of the St Mary’s Old Girls Association, and was a Vice President for a great many years.

Gladys kept her links with the school throughout her long and busy life, and was visited in her 100th year by three fourth form girls whom she thoroughly charmed with anecdotes of her school days. The occasion was fortunately filmed for prosperity.
